Raiders Face Decatur Looking for First Win

Raiders defense

The Raiders travel to Decatur on Friday hungry for their first win after a stinging home loss to the the Monroe Area Hurricanes.

Riverwood scored its first touchdown of the year against the Hurricanes, capping an 88-yard opening drive with a Robert Beckley touchdown pass to senior wideout Matt Onyegbuchulam.

But the combination of Raider turnovers and a high powered Hurriance offense proved too much, as Monroe Area dominated the rest of the game.

The Hurricanes were led by quarterback Demond Smith who ran for four touchdowns and threw for another.  The Raider offense was limited to 141 total yards and committed six turnovers.

The Raiders face a Decatur team that kicked off their season last Friday, defeating North Springs 25-12.

Raiders 2010 Season Outlook - Sandy Springs Neighbor

"No Longer Rebuilding"

Head coach Robert Ingram enters his third season leading the Class AAA Raiders, and he said his team is ready to take the next step. His expectations are for more than just a winning season.

“We feel like we’ve come out of the rebuilding stage, and now we’re just trying to find consistency,” Ingram said. “We feel like we’re now at a point where we ought to be winning five, six, seven ballgames a year and getting into the playoffs."

Chumbley Named Pre-Season Academic All-American

Alex Chumbley
Raiders senior running back Alex Chumbley has been selected a pre-season Academic All-American by Georgia High School Magazine.
A team captain, Chumbley is expected to be a top rusher for the Raiders, after rumbling for more than 800 yards last year season.  Chumbley is an IB diploma candidate at Riverwood and a member of the Georgia all state student orchestra.

Region 5AAA-A Alignment

The Raiders will face two new in-region foes in 2010. As part of its statewide conference realignment announced last Spring, the Georgia High School Athletic Association moved North Springs and Druid Hills into 5AAA-A, shifting Carver-Atlanta and Therrell to another region.

The move renews a decades-long, but recently dormant football rivalry between Riverwood and Sandy Springs neighbor North Springs.

The new 5AAA-A region includes:

-RIVERWOOD

-Druid Hills

-Grady

-North Atlanta

-North Springs

-St. Pius X

-Washington, Atlanta

Riverwood's 2010 schedule features season opening rival Holy Innocents, while replacing long-time out-of-region opponent Blessed Trinity with Decatur.

Team Principles

These principles are essential to the quality of the Raider Football program. They serve as a foundational belief system for our staff, our student-athletes, our alumni, and our supporters. All of our actions grow from these guiding principles and shape who we are and what we strive to achieve.

WE GRADUATE

The primary expectation of all student-athletes is to earn their high school diploma. The student-athlete must display the initiative required to graduate. Coaches and staff members play vital roles in directing and nurturing the student-athlete’s path to graduation. Graduation, above all else, is the common goal of everyone-it is why student-athletes attend school and why coaches and staff members have chosen a career as an educator.

WE TRANSFORM LIVES

The high school football experience instills into student-athletes the intangibles which assist them in earning a successful and independent life. Through this participation, Riverwood Raider Football players acquire a sense of:

  • Responsibility for their own actions,
  • Loyalty to a group,
  • Pride in sacrifice and appreciation for work ethic,
  • Self-discipline and self-motivation,
  • Humility and graciousness in success,
  • Dignity in defeat,
  • Respect for others and themselves,
  • Excelling within social and moral parameters,
  • Basic sportsmanship,
  • Honesty,
  • Moral leadership,
  • Commitment to excellence in all aspects of life.

WE SERVE OUR COMMUNITY

Staff members and student-athletes gain a sense of value for service to our community. We strive to connect with and serve those people within and around the school community. The concept of service learning is something we value and instill into our student-athletes.

WE LIVE BY THE RULES

Staff members, student-athletes and supporters of the RIVERWOOD RAIDER FOOTBALL family adhere to team, departmental, school, Region, and Georgia High School Association and State of Georgia rules and regulations. We take pride in competing the right way!!

WE WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS

We expect to excel and compete for a championship.  It is not a hope or a wish -  it is an expectation. We aspire to be good people and great teams who compete for and win STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS!
